How to Get Your YouTube Official Artist Channel in India: The Complete Guide

What is a YouTube Official Artist Channel?

A YouTube Official Artist Channel (OAC) is a verified channel that aggregates all your music — your own videos, auto-generated topic channels, and label-uploaded content — into one authoritative destination for fans. It unlocks the music shelf feature on your channel page, where your albums, singles, and playlists are displayed in a structured, discoverable format.

For Indian independent artists, getting an OAC used to feel out of reach. It's not. Here's exactly how it works.

Who qualifies for a YouTube OAC?

To be eligible for an Official Artist Channel, you need:

  • At least one song distributed to YouTube Music / YouTube via a digital distributor (such as DistroKid, TuneCore, Believe, or CD Baby)
  • An active YouTube channel that you own
  • Your distributor must submit your OAC request on your behalf through their YouTube partnership

Most Indian artists work with distributors like DistroKid, TuneCore, or Believe Digital — all of which have OAC submission programmes.

The Setup Process

Step 1: Distribute your music

If you haven't already, release at least one song through a distributor. Make sure your artist name is consistent across Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.

Step 2: Claim your YouTube channel

Log into your distributor dashboard and look for the "Claim YouTube Channel" or "YouTube Official Artist Channel" option. You'll need to provide the URL of your existing YouTube channel.

Step 3: Wait for YouTube's review

YouTube typically takes 2–6 weeks to review and merge the channels. Once approved, your channel will display the music shelf, verified badge (if eligible), and auto-generated content will be consolidated.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Inconsistent artist name — "Arjun Mehta" on Spotify but "ArjunMehtaOfficial" on YouTube confuses the algorithm
  • Multiple channels — Have one primary channel, not several old channels you've forgotten
  • No music released — You must have at least one distributed song before applying

What changes after you get an OAC?

Your channel page will feature a dedicated Music shelf with all your releases. YouTube will automatically add new releases to your channel as your distributor uploads them. You'll see a significant improvement in how YouTube surfaces your content to new listeners.

At Metric Music, we handle the entire OAC setup process — from coordinating with your distributor to following up with YouTube — as part of our Artist Setup Pack.
